Justin Peacock
Dear Reader,
My first novel, A CURE FOR NIGHT, is about a young lawyer who is struggling to rebuild his life after a scandal destroys his promising career at an elite law firm. Ending up as a public defender in Brooklyn, the narrator teams up with a female attorney on a case in which their client, a black man from the projects who is an admitted drug dealer, is accused of killing a white college student. Novelist Mark Costello called the book "the best courtroom novel in a generation."
In writing the book, it was my goal to tell a suspenseful, twisting story, while also providing a deeper meditation on the workings of the law -- how a trial is itself a form of storytelling in which the truth often takes a back seat to the story's own demands. Publishers Weekly wrote that: "Peacock's intimate knowledge of the courtroom and carefully crafted prose aside, the gritty realism, intense emotional intimacy and socially relevant subject matterracism, America's war on drugs, the 'corporate culture' of drug dealersmake this a deeply thought-provoking read in a genre that can be anything but." The Washington Lawyer called A CURE FOR NIGHT "a remarkable debut" by "a gem of a writer, storyteller, and moralist."
