Sue Scheff

Dear Reader,

As a single mother, I offered my daughter, Ashlyn, everything I could—striving to make up for a fatherless household. But when my beloved child became a teenager, everything changed. Ashlyn embraced disturbing beliefs and behavior, made friends with a strange and maladjusted group at school, and refused to abide by rules. In desperation I turned to a residential treatment facility. I believed that a "professional" treatment facility would offer my daughter the structure and discipline that she sorely needed. But after spending thousands of dollars and seeing the troubling behavior in my child continue to escalate, I started to hear stories of Ashlyn and other classmates being kept in inhumane conditions, as well as beatings, sexual abuse, forced starvation, neglect, and suicide. The daughter I had turned over to be helped by supposed professionals returned to me broken, depressed, and suicidal.

I fought back against the institution that should have helped my daughter and ultimately won an unprecedented case with a jury verdict for damages of over $11 million. Today I run P.U.R.E. (Parents' Universal Resource Experts), an advocacy group that draws parents together and helps them find ways to protect their children from destructive influences. In WITS' END I provide positive, prescriptive help for families who want to put their children on the road to a safe, healthy, happy, and independent adulthood.
