Dear Reader,

Do curses work?

This is the question Acturus asks himself when he and his wife, Gwyna, visit Aquae Sulis (Bath) for a belated honeymoon and instead encounter murder, ghosts, and a man who can raise the dead ...

THE CURSE-MAKER is a re-launch of my "Roman noir" series, which debuted in 2008 with my very first novel, NOX DORMIENDA.  Thanks to the support of readers like you, NOX won the Bruce Alexander Memorial Historical Mystery Award for Best Historical Mystery of 2008.

THE CURSE-MAKER is set in Roman Britain, 84 AD—but this is no dry, dusty history book. I try to write this world as it lived and breathed, vivid and thrilling, in a hardboiled but accessible style that's been affectionately dubbed "Roman noir."

As a classics scholar, the idea of curses and magic fascinated me. After a trip to the Roman Bath Museum in Bath, England—during which I had a chance to examine several excavated curses—I knew I had to write this novel. I could feel the power in the ancient lead—feel the threat and the hope behind the scratched letters. My website at www.KelliStanley.com offers more background information, including interactive material and multimedia for all of my books.

NOX was originally published with a small press—and with THE CURSE-MAKER, I realize the rare dream of seeing these characters win a chance with a larger audience. I hope you enjoy them!

Drop me a line at contest@KelliStanley.com (subject line: Dear Reader) for a chance to win one of five autographed copies of THE CURSE-MAKER—just tell me your favorite good luck ritual or object!

Thanks for all your support—and bona fortuna!
Kelli Stanley
