Dear Reader,
After reading John Steinbeck's East of Eden, I wanted to do what he had done: create new characters modeled after classic characters – in his case, Cain and Abel, and in mine, Romeo and Juliet – to structure a story and make it my own. The result is THE BRIDGE AT VALENTINE, set in 1890's Idaho.
July Caldwell, the daughter of a sheepman, and Rory Morrow, the son of a cattleman, find themselves embroiled in their fathers' bitter feud to control the rangeland. The battle over grazing rights pits family against family, resulting in a tragedy from which July and Rory struggle to recover. But with tragedy comes triumph and hope for the future – and ultimately, a young woman's determination to strike out on her own.
Like July and Rory, I too love the land. My husband and I recently bought a house on five acres, complete with goats. I don't yet have names for them, but if you'll suggest a few, I'll pick my top five favorites, then send the winners a free copy of THE BRIDGE AT VALENTINE.
Send your suggestions to renee@reneethompson.com – meanwhile, thank you for reading.
